Bible in a Year: The Return & Maccabean Revolt

And we’re off into another era of the Bible: The Return (to Jerusalem from exile to Babylon) and the Maccabean revolt. A few smaller books I zoomed through and didn’t summarize: Ezra, Haggai, Zechariah and Nehemiah

  • Esther - this was one of my favorite books. Esther was a jewish orphan and a beautiful pageant girl. She became queen to the king of Persia but without revealing she was jewish. Her older cousin was also part of the kings court and saved the king from assasination at one point. Then, Haman, the grand vizier to the king, plotted to kill off all jews. Esther bravely approached the king (which typically in itself would lead to the death penalty) and pleas for help on behalf of the jewish people. He accepts her visit. Esther holds two banquets with the king and Haman in attendance. at the second banquet she reveals that she was jewish, exposes Haman’s plot. This enraged the king and he took immediate action and hung Haman by the gallows that were meant for Esther’s older cousin. Esther is a courageous woman. She was loyal to her people.

    • I had no idea of this story and that Esther’s story was the origin of Purim. I recall when my “work brother” Noah would take time off for purim and would tell me about the fun events with his family. Purim is an annual Jewish festival that celebrates with feasting, giving to the poor, and public readings of the Megillah (Scroll of Esther).

  • Malachi - The word Malachi means ”messenger” of which he brings a word from God to the people. The book begins with God saying, “I have loved you.” But the people question it: How have you loved us?. Malachi predicts the coming of Jesus - “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me.” — Malachi 3:1

  • Maccabees 1 - This book is a historical recount of what happened in the age of Alexander the Great between Greece, the Romans and the Jewish people. This book was more political and centered around wars.

  • Maccabees 2 - The second book of Maccabees was focused on God’s protection and presence over Judea during the time. Judas ("The Hammer") was a primary character who was strong and led successful military movements against the Greeks while the jews defend and protect the temple. I was amazed that people would put their lives on the line in order to protect the temple over their family. I cannot see that happening today.

  • Sirach - I liked this book. It’s included in Catholic bibles but not necessarily other bibles. It’s also called the Book of Wisdom or Ecclesiasities. It’s less poetic than Proverbs but has so many beautiful insights on how to live a life with values. Some memorable passages:

    • FRIENDSHIP

      • Do not trust a new friend quickly; test them over time to see if they prove loyal (Sirach 6:7)

      • Keep many at peace, but let your inner circle of close counselors be rare—"one in a thousand" (Sirach 6:6)

      • A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; whoever finds one finds a treasure" (Sirach 6:14)

      • No amount of gold or silver can balance the worth of a loyal friend (Sirach 6:15)

    • MARRAIGE

      • Happy is the husband of a good wife; the number of his days will be doubled." A loyal wife lets a man finish his years in peace

      • A good wife is a generous gift given to those who fear the Lord, bringing a cheerful face and a content heart whether rich or poor.

      • A happy marriage between a husband and wife living in harmony is listed among the things pleasing to the Lord and humanity.

    • Morals

      • Sirach 1:22: "Unjust anger can never be justified; anger pulls a person to utter ruin."

      • Forgive a wrong done by your neighbor; then your sins will be pardoned when you pray.

  • Wisdom (of Solomon): This book was talking about wisdom (described as “her” and in feminine sense) and as a gift from god. It was written well and was an enjoyable read with some good nuggets.

And now I am proud to say that I finished the Old Testament! I am heading into day 313 out of the 265 days! I am excited to launch into the Book of Luke and Acts! yay!
