A Very Merry Morocco

We went on a very different adventure for christmas this year and toured Morocco! A wonderful trip with a knowledgeable guide helped navigate this foreign country! First stop was Fes, the “Mecca of the West” where Islam Was brought to Africa.

Fes

A highlight of the trip was a Street food tour. I usually don’t eat street vendor food in america so this was a huge stretch for me however my son went wild! We at beef kidney & spleen and camel. Dates and walnuts. Pancakes and skewers. Goat cheese, fava bean soup, beef and chicken egg rolls. Needless to say we didn’t make dinner that night.

We shopped artisanal handmade silks, clay mosaics made of salt and olive seed (Tyler spun his own bowl), and went to largest natural leather tanneries (Chouara Tannery) in the world that softens goat, cow and camel hides with a mixture of pigeon poop and cow urine then colors with natural dyes like poppy, indigo, saffron and more.

Rabat

Our next city was Rabat, the current capital and where the king lives. This city was on the shore and felt more European. There were these cute trees all shaped into squares and rectangles that reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.

Agafay Desert

We arrived for a night in the desert, part of the trip we were most excited about! This is where we added adventure and dust to the program with ATVs and a sunset camel rides. We slept in a luxury tent under the stars which reminded us of our african safari we loved so much.

Marrakech

Our last stop is the bustling city of Marrakech. This city has a whole different vibe and more modern aspects like NOBU which we ate for Christmas Dinner! We enjoyed a cooking class one day and made 4 different dishes together.

Another highlight was a side car tour of the city. We stopped to give toys out to kids and they came from all directions and grabbed into our bag! Wish we had more at the time.

Seeing all the colors of spices was similar to Dubai but the markets were very unique. The square at night time was also entertaining with musical acts, games, male belly dancers and foods.

We were ready to head home after over a week driving from city to city but overall the trip was a wonderful family vacation. Tyler enjoyed himself and was thankful for the experience. Merry Christmas and See ya later 2024!
