Biohacking: Diet Edition

Whole Foods diet

A favorite topic these days is diet… not to lose weight, but to ensure my body is getting the best ingredients possible which comes with a lot of research and work with a huge dividend for you and your family!

We embarked on a wellness journey starting in December 2023 since my husband had gut and inflammation issues he needed to get under control. It impacted the entire family but in retrospect in a positive, healthy way. We hired a chef to guide us further on this journey and it’s been an amazing and tasty ride!

Quality Whole Foods

  • Wild Caught Fish

    • yes farm raised salmon is still the best tasting but did you know it doesn’t even have the nutrients or protein quality you think you’re eating?! It’s a complete waste of calories! Check out Wild Alaskan Company and Seatopia!

  • Regenerative Meats

    • Even better than antibiotic free and “organic” because the label “farm raised” doesn’t mean anything anymore. Farms can still over till, use feeds that aren’t the best and provide terrible living conditions. Look up regenerative meats which can be found at Whole Foods as well.

  • Organic Fruits and Vegetables

    • I am eating vegetables with each lunch and dinner now which is way more than I used to eat.

Removal of Bad Ingredients:

  • Seed Oils!

    • These are terrible for our bodies and what most restaurants use I am sure of it! When eating out ask what oils your meat/meal is being cooked in and ask for the cleanest option they have! (olive oil, avocado oil, etc)

  • Fake Sugars

  • Gums and Binders

    • Gums are used to thicken sauces and make things more decadent. These are unnatural and can disrupt your digestion:

      • Gum Arabic: A binder used in food and pharmaceuticals

      • Guar Gum: A thickening and stabilizing agent used in food, cosmetics, and industrial applications.

      • Xanthan Gum: A bacterial polysaccharide used as a thickener and binder in food and other applications.

  • “Natural Flavors” and “Artificual Flavors”

I took my diet journey even further by reducing toxins that were getting into my body via other routes!

Removal of Toxins

  • Switched to glassware

    • Throw out all that plasticware and change to glass to reduce micro and nanoplastics in your body and daily life. We removed our beloved Tervis tumblers from our cabinets and changed out to glasses. We removed all plastic storage containers and swapped to glass. WE got rid of plastic strainers as well.

  • changed to laundry detergent & dishwasher detergents

    • This is still a journey to find the best ones on the market that actually clean well.

  • Switched makeup and bathroom products

    • Discarded items with bad ingredients by inputting most items I put on my skin using the Think Dirty app. Did you know Fragrance is a skin and lung irritant? Luckily I don’t wear perfume or wear smelly lotions since my husband is extremely sensitive to scents so I was ahead of the game on this but so many lotions and skincare routines have fragrance in them which isn’t healthy.

    • Think Dirty app has been helpful in identifying products I use that have active ingredients that are toxins and even illegal in other countries.

And that’s not all! To get more serious and dare I say scientific, I’ve layered on the following:

  • TRacking Macros - I’ve never tracked macros before. Actually I had to learn what macros were! Through the Faster Way program I had to quickly learn (through the program’s helpful hand holding) and started learning exactly what ratios of carbs, fiber, fats and proteins I’ve been eating vs. what I should be eating.

  • Water Intake - I target over 90 ounces of water per day if not more. I carry my glass water bottle with me everywhere!

  • Intermittent Fasting - I try to fast 16hrs every day. To do this i also try to finish dinner by 6pm or 6:30pm. Also in the morning i needed to change up my coffee routine by removing sugars. So I no longer use creamer. At first I was using Leaner Creamer or Nut pods but have more recently shifted to MCT oil. To be honest, I am over drinking coffee. It’s more of a habit in the morning that being enjoyable at this point.
