Biohacking: Supplements Edition
This past year+ has been focused on not only recovery from spine surgery but rebuilding from the cellular level. I am loving my Instagram feed as it’s all fitness, wellness and biohacking tips. In the past I have not taken many supplements as usually all vitamins and minerals should be sourced from foods we eat. I eat a very well balanced diet of whole foods, organic fruits and veggies, organic, antibiotic free and/or regenerative meats and wild caught fish. It takes planning to find the healthiest protein options. As I age my body needs a few additional supplements for my body to help slow the aging process and prime my body to function its best.
Here are my Go-To supplements:
NAD+
NAD is part of every cell of our body but declines with age. And because of that decline we see disease occur such as cognitive decline, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. NAD+ comes in a variety of forms but from my education IV and Subcutaneous injections are the most impactful. I take 50mg per day if I can remember to prick myself. Benefits of NAD+ include":
Metabolism - it helps convert food into energy
Cellular Repair
Support and may even Slow Aging
Improved energy levels and metabolism
Improved brain function
Reduced inflammation
Better cardiovascular health
Aides in muscle recovery
Improving sleep patterns
Creatine
I recently added creatine to my protocol since my goal these past 6 months was to regain strength and add muscle post surgery. Building muscle gets harder as we age so creatine helps boost my bodies ability to provide energy to my muscles and for recovery. I take 5mg of creatine powder almost every day alongside my workouts. Make sure you research the brands you purchase as many powders can be filled with unhealthy additives. Bottles labeled with “Creapure” have been tested for purity and known as safe.
Electrolytes
For hydration and to flavor my workout drinks, I add electrolytes to my glass water bottle. I’m still on the hunt for my favorite brand but so far the sugar-free LMNT is my go-to however it uses Stevia which I try to avoid. Anyone have a better option?
Colostrom
To help with immunity, gut health, metabolism, hair, skin, energy levels and more. Do I see a difference in all these areas? No idea! But it can’t hurt. I use the Armra brand exclusively and am up to 4 scoops per day.
Glutathione
When I remember to take my NAD+ shot I also grab the Glutathione bottle and take a syringe. Glutathione is a naturally produced tripeptide in our bodies that helps a variety of functions:
Antioxidant Powerhouse: It helps neutralize free radicals that can damage DNA and cells, protecting against oxidative stress.
Detoxification: Aides in binding toxins (heavy metals and pollutants) to allow our body to get rid of them.
Immune System Support
Inflammation
Cellular Health: Supports DNA repair and regulates cell growth
and more!
Perfect Aminos
I recently added in Perfect Aminos thanks to being targeted on Instagram. It intuitively made sense that our bodies need to build new proteins which is a foundational building block of goodness in our body. It is super science-oriented but you can learn more about how it works here: https://bodyhealth.com/products/perfectamino
I take perfect aminos almost once a day and add it into my workout drink.
How Do I take these?
To get most of these items in all at once I make a large water for my workout that includes:
5mg creatine
1 scoop perfect aminos
1 packet LMNT electrolyte
4 scoops Colostrom
Other Supplements I am trying:
DOSE
I just ordered and started using Dose, a liver cleanse drink. Thanks to another Instagram targeted ads and videos I finally succombed to it. I like the idea of treating my liver well since it’s a critical organ for overall health however once I received it and looked at the ingredients it has things I’ve removed from my diet (i.e. Erythritol and xantam gum and the dreaded “organic flavors” and whatever that is).
IM8
Instead of taking a variety of different supplements, IM8 has “92 nutrient-rich ingredients” in each serving. The drawbacks to this in my opinion are:
I should be getting these ingredients in my diet and I haven’t done proper bloodwork to say Im deficient in any of these
It’s pricey and doesn’t take great. Actually it makes my breath stink
The anti-aging pill (a secondary buy) tasted awful and I burp fish smells. gross
Activated Charcoal
My husband takes this and I just ordered some for myself! From what I understand it helps trap impurities and toxins in our bodies and helps get rid of it like a garbage disposal.
COQ10
I just ordered this bad boy to help be a super antioxidant and increase energy production at the cellular level and Cardiovascular Support.
